The guitar is one of the most popular and well – known musical instruments worldwide. It is played by millions of people and there are many guitarists that leave audiences in awe with their guitar skills. Some of these bands or musicians inspire their audiences and many young fans tend to start playing guitar as a hobby because of them.
Young people love playing the guitar to play their favorite songs, to show off to their friends and to take part in music activities, and that is great! Also, many older people are music lovers and they, just like the young, feel the need to take up guitar. However, most of them feel that playing the guitar may be difficult for them for many reasons.
One of the most common reasons why older people don’t start playing the guitar or any other musical instrument is their age. I have spoken with many older people about music and taking up guitar. Most of their answers are “No, not for me” , “I’d love to, I love guitar, but if only I was younger” , “If I was younger, I would be bigger than [insert famous guitarist’s name] ” etc, and I wondered to myself, what makes them think so?
In this article, I will try to convince YOU, why you are never too old to start playing guitar, and trust me, after reading this, you will feel more confident about yourself.
The answer: NO!
No, you are not too old to start playing the guitar. In fact, you can never be too old to start playing the guitar. You see, playing the guitar is a hobby, just like many other hobbies. Instead of solving Sudoku or watching movies, one can simply play a few chords on the guitar and feel a lot happier afterwards.
Learning the guitar is definitely not solely for the young. You see, learning the guitar is just like learning a foreign language because, music is a language itself. Learning to speak the language of music is something really inspiring and magical. It is a connection with art itself. If you have never had a learning musical experience before, I highly suggest you do now!
Playing the guitar trains your brain
Many older people find it important to train their brain and memory every day. That can be done in various ways, but one of them could definitely be the guitar. While learning to play the guitar, you have the chance to learn a variety of chords and songs. If that’s not memory training, I don’t know what is.
Also, see learning to play the guitar as a new experience. While getting older, people may feel sick and tired of their every day life, experiencing something new may seem unapproachable, but yet ideal. So, try playing the guitar instead of sticking to your daily hobbies. You will feel refreshed and happy once again!
We may say that older people don’t tend to try new things because of physical difficulties, but that may be because society tends to disapprove of that. Yes, it’s us who bring them down. Being old doesn’t mean anything at all, but many people don’t see it that way. Society has taught us that, after passing a certain age, people aren’t allowed to do a lot of things young people do, which is definitely not true.
I absolutely disagree. Anyone, no matter their age, are allowed to experience new things and learn. No matter how old you are, id you have a skill and a talent, they will show to others. So, be confident, and spread your confidence around. Show with your example that is CAN be done, I guarantee you it can be done!
Think of the advantages you have against the young!
You do have a ton of advantages that young people don’t. You may not be as young and energetic as them, but in most cases, you are an independent adult, therefore you have the chance to make decisions for yourself. This means, financial independence. You can purchase your own equipment and hire any teacher you like to teach you! Many young people’s parents feel that music has nothing to offer to their career, so they discourage their children from taking up music, and you don’t have that!
Also, in most cases again, you are more likely to have free time than younger people. Most young people have school or university studies, they try to pursue a career and become independent or they are trying to find themselves and their identity. You are in a more stable place than most young people, and this gives you the chance to focus even better on your music studies.
Good luck on learning!
Remember, you have the power to do anything you set your mind and focus on. If you are older, you know that hard work always pays off and that you will get the results that you want at the end of the day. Keep in mind that age is just a number that doesn’t define our abilities, skills and talents. Even though being older may mean a lot of problems. You will soon realize that music is a break from today’s world and every day life.
Music gives your life even more meanings. Take small opportunities, like your love for music, and turn them into goals that you can achieve. It is not only about acquiring skills and becoming a gifted musician. It is also about feeling satisfied with ourselves and our lives. The feeling of accomplishment you get once you play a song flawlessly tops everything. If you are already a musician, you surely know the feeling. Get your hands on a guitar and let it change your life!
