If you are here, you probably love guitar as much as me. I have been playing the guitar for many years and I have tried a bunch of different things, some of which helped my learning, some didn’t, and others just slowed it down. The process kept causing me frustrating throughout the years. Why is guitar so difficult, in times of trouble, I asked myself.
Now, after all these experiences, I can finally say that guitar is not a very difficult instrument to play. In fact, nowadays, I can say that my fingers have become way more flexible than they used to be on the guitar. I sometimes wonder how I am able to play all these melodies.
If only I had the experience I have now, back then… If only I knew all the things I know now… Luckily for you, I will be sharing them with you today, so that you have the chance to learn faster and easier than me. I believe in you and you have got this! If you get to a point where you can achieve all my suggestions, you will be learning the guitar quicker that ever!
Practice once at least every day
Honestly, many beginner guitar players don’t understand the power and the importance of practice, not only on the guitar but also on every musical instrument you ever decide to take up.
It is important to keep track of your practices. I suggest you practice every day a bit. Practice will make you better.
To be honest, practicing a little each and every day will bring you the best results. Practicing a little every day is better than practicing a lot on time each week for example. That is because your brain needs time to learn and process things.
Breaks are also important. Set small, realistic goals every day. You don’t have to practice too much every day or you will eventually tire yourself.
Always make sure your guitar is well – tuned
Oh, this was one of my biggest mistakes as a beginner guitar player. I would immediately start playing without checking if the guitar is tuned first.
This is really important because if your guitar is not tuned well, you will get the wrong sounds no matter how well you play the guitar. This will frustrate you at first, but it has to be done.
Don’t worry though, your guitar won’t always be out of tune if you often use it.
Also, there are several different ways to tune your guitar, other than the standard way. You can ask your teacher to show you some ways or watch tutorials online.
If you choose to practice a song without your teacher, make sure you tune your guitar the right way.
Get advice online if needed. Many creators offer a lot of guitar practicing completely free!
Don’t buy neither the cheapest nor the most expensive equipment
This can be tricky. You see, most of the time, we say that the more expensive something is, the better the quality. In most cases when it comes to guitar playing, this is not true. Some shops may trick you into buying their most expensive piece of equipment, when in reality, you don’t actually need it.
Of course, choosing the cheapest option is also not so smart. Organize a budget and ask around for prices to get the best deal. This may be overwhelming at first, but it is worth it. Ask yourself “Will I really need this?” , “Does the cheapest option do the same thing?” , “Is this suitable for my needs?” . You will find yourself buying a lot of equipment if you take your guitar lessons seriously. So, why not buy smart?
Don’t stick to the teacher’s book
This is really important. When learning a musical instrument it is important that we learn it to the maximum.
Therefore, try to explore other guitarists’ music or play songs that you like on the guitar.
Remember to tune your guitar the right way and find an understandable tutorial or sheet of music online (or stick to another music book you have).
This can be a fun way of learning new things and practicing songs that YOU like and choose at the same time.
The teacher is here to help you and do their job, but it is crucial that you find and practice things by yourself. This way, you will get the feeling of satisfaction when the process of learning the song you love is complete. You can always ask your teacher for extra help when it comes to the songs that you are learning alone.
Don’t think that you will offend them if you show that you are practicing different things alone. Instead, I believe that they will feel happy about you. They will feel that their efforts to teach you are finally paying off.
Remember that everyone makes mistakes, everyone has bad days and bad moments. Therefore, I believe that you really should keep trying.
You need to go on in order to achieve your goals and when you do, you will feel grateful that you kept holding on until the end.
You can always ask your teacher for extra help or ask me! If you don’t have a teacher I will gladly respond to your questions and problems.
Don’t ever be afraid to ask those who have the answer. This way, you can achieve progress no matter what you do. Be confident and don’t hesitate. You can do anything you set your mind on.
