Recently I was doing some research for music and I came across a surprising fact. As I was looking at research results from several universities I found that country (the music genre) is actually more popular that I thought.

I was so surprised because I had never had an experience with country music in the past and I was curious. So, the past week I’ve been listening to country almost every day and, I was again surprised, since I found all these amazing musical creations this genre offers to the listener.

My little experience provides me with a few country songs of all time that I would like to recommend. Even though listening to country started out of curiosity, I’m sure this genre will continue being one of my favorites in the future

But what is actually country?Country Musician

After my research on the Web. I found several interesting facts about country. Country is a form of popular music originating in the rural southern US. It is traditionally a mixture of ballads and dance tunes played characteristically on fiddle, guitar, steel guitar, drums, and keyboard (according to Wikipedia).

In other words, the country artists have to be creative and non repetitive at all times, that’s how they will be able to produce these timeless masterpieces. Also, country music requires playing a mixture of different types of guitars, that’s why many people might confuse the country songs with rock or even pop songs. But with a little more experience, anyone can tell the difference trust me! If you listen to country consistently for some time (provided that you’re not familiar with it), it will definitely be obvious.

Now, country was and is the music genre of the people (that’s how I like to call these genres) because it actually engages the person, it makes them want to dance, sing etc. People don’t simply absorb pathetically music, they put their body and mind into action. That’s what makes country so popular, according to my opinion.

So, without further ado, these are my top songs:

1. Take Me Home, Country Roads – John DenverCountry Musician

You don’t really need to be an expert at country to be familiar with this song. I knew this song before I started listening to country, I just never realized its genre was country. I can imagine people sitting in a bar in the southern US while listening to this song and naturally singing together.

It really reminds me of the south US, even though there are many other great country song, I believe that this song is the most unforgettable of them all. John Denver is a very revolutionary artist and he has helped in shaping the music industry to what it is today.

It will forever be a magnificent song, always a part of the people who adore country music.

2. The Gambler – Kenny Rogers

This song is immediately catchy, that’s why it has my attention until today. It was the second song I fully heard and I fell in love with country. I knew that this tune will be stuck in my head for days and it is! It tells a magnificent story, which travels he minds of the listener magically.

Kenny Rogers is and will forever be an incredible musician whose songs will remain unforgettable to people’s hearts. He sadly passed away, but after leaving all this work behind, he will surely be remembered.

Give this song a listen it won’t let you down. On the contrary, it will prove why country is so popular among so many people worldwide.

3. Lady – Kenny RogersCountry Musician

This is a slightly slower, more ballad – like song, I believe. I firstly heard the live version and I thought to myself: “If I ever found this online randomly, the country genre would never cross my mind”. It is one of the best songs of alll time if you ask me. It embraces the new listener to country music and it shows them the true power of this genre.

A truly moving song, by an amazing artist. As a new country listener, this artist immediately captured my attention and interest. If you are an experienced country listener do you like Kenny Rogers as much as I do? Let me know in the comments!

4. Leaving on a Jet Plane – John Denver

Another slow country song, which is great since I love them. I always mention the fact that they are slow because I never thought slow country songs exist (how foolish of me!). Not only do they exist but they are also sentimental, expressing and able to bring tears in the eyes of the listener, I’m not exaggerating.

I am very fond of travelling and this song reminded me of visiting places with my parents when I was younger. It woke a memory in me that I had forgotten and that created my special feelings towards country.

I always listen to it when I need comfort and it never fails to get me back on my feet again. I highly recommend it!Cowboy Hat

5. Country Boy – Alan Jackson

Now, by the title, most people can tell this is a country song. But even if you listen to it for the first time without knowing the name, you will know the genre. It’s the vibe of this song and the guitar playing that makes it special. It is a very catchy tune and if someone asked me what country music is, I would definitely tell them to listen to this song.

I suggest that you give it a listen and tell me your opinion in the comments. Doesn’t this song remind you of something too? Ever since I listened to this for the first time, I can’t stop thinking about it.

Listen and tell me your opinion

  1. Reading your introduction to the Country music genre made me think of the lyrics of a song I haven’t thought of for a long time. They are comical, and they help describe a sub-genre of Country music which I think of as “alcoholic” Country.

The chorus goes: “I’m gonna hire a Wino to decorate our home, so you’ll feel more at ease here and you won’t need to roam. I’ll take out the dining room table and put a bar along that wall, and a neon sign will point the way to the bathroom down the hall.”

My ex-husband was an alcoholic, and the only country songs he ever listened to were the sub-genre about drinking and partying. At the time, I was new to Country music and that’s what I thought ALL the songs were about!

You can imagine my delight when I first heard that lament from a wife who is sick and tired of her husband’s drinking!

Country music is a very diverse genre with deep roots. I encourage you to continue to explore it. Your choices of songs are all very good, classic ones. I am curious which songs you would pick after a year or two of listening to Country music.

    1. Hi Lisa. Thanks for your comment! Wow, looks like there’s a lot to learn about country, and that’s not surprising since it has a long history. I’m sorry about your ex husband, though, and I’m glad you don’t associate country music with this sub genre only anymore.

  2. I grew up in the era where country songs were very popular. Yes we also had rock and roll, but country songs were the ones where we could all sing along. It is often sentimental, which means one can relate to it. And one can hear the actual words, not just noise of drums. John Denver is one of my favourite country singers, so great to see him here as well.

    1. Hi LineCowley. Thanks for your comment! I am new to country music and I’m glad that it is a sentiment genre to many people. I like John Denver too!

  3. As a musician, I am also a huge fan of music, and even though I’m from Appalachia, I have not yet caught the country music bug. However, there is no denying that some of the best songs ever are considered “country” and I can see that you have chosen some that I could easily sing by heart. In fact, the first song I ever learned as a child was your #1 pick!

The only one I’m not familiar with is the Alan Jackson song that you chose, so knowing I can trust your judgment here, I’m going to look that up right now!

PS have you considered embedding videos (or just posting links) to recordings of these songs for your readers to easily listen to them?

Thanks so much for the fun read!

    1. Hi Aly. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’m glad you liked my article and know the songs I picked.

Great idea. Since I’m recommending songs, it would be way more helpful if I added links. Thanks for that!

  4. Hi Dominique, I’m pleased to meet you once again. Well, I did not know that Country is a form of popular music originating in the rural southern US; a traditional mixture of ballads and dance tunes played on different instruments, as your researched revealed. I have noted your recommendations and I will listen to them.

    1. Hi Kokontala. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

I’m glad you comment on a lot of my posts, thanks for reading them.

Give the songs I recommended a listen, they’re worth it.

  5. Ooooooh …. so nice to read that you like Kenny Rogers. He is MY favorite too. The Gambler is just awesome isn’t it! And so many others. I also love so many others, like “islands in the stream” and “Annies Song”.

Thank you for taking me back to my childhood. I actually relived some great memories that came alive with these old country numbers. Life is beautiful when u have songs to relate to your experiences.

    1. Hi Aparna. Thank you for your comment.

I’m glad that I had the chance to remind you of childhood memories and that you like Kenny Rodgers too!

I will definitely listen to these songs. Thank you!

  6. This article is so helpful for someone like me who is confused about all the type of music like country, pop, etc. I love listening to music, but I can’t identify what kind it is. I just refer to all of them as music,:). I love most of the songs that you mentioned as an example, and based on that, I guess that the type of music I like the most is country. I love listening to old music.

    1. Hi Julai. Thanks for your comment.

I’m glad I helped you. Now, you are able to listen to songs and identify their genres.

      I love old music too!

  7. I really like Gabby Barrett’s song “I Hope”. But I know it doesn’t belong to the best of all times. However I do have a suggestion. I would include Tammy Wynette in this list. In my book, she’s one of country music’s best-known artists. And her vocals are outstanding in the genre. Would you agree with me?

    1. Hi Ann. Thank you for your comment!

After reading you recommendation, I listened to a couple of songs of Tammy Wynette and I must say she is unique.

As a new country music listener I don’t know many artists, but I’m glad that there is female representation on this genre too.

Thanks for letting me know about her!

  8. This is a good article on Country music, which is not my most favourite type of music, but looking at your list I have heard of 3 of them and like them as songs.

What might be a good idea is to have a section where you can actually listen to the music, a bit like you do wit ha Podcast, but overall I enjyed reading what you put

    1. Hi Dave! Thank you for your comment!

I loved your idea. I might actually start doing podcasts or something like that, so that I can listen to the song with my audience and tell them my opinion about it when it comes to mind. Thank you for this creative suggestion.

I’m also very happy that you liked some songs i listed!

  9. Thanks for sharing this article. I was just having a read at it there and found it very interesting indeed. It’s an interesting selection you have included of all the popular favourites. However, I also like the way thatcountry music has evolved and has brought with it some great concepts such as Psychobilly. Check Hank III

    1. Hi. Thanks for your comment.

I’m glad you found my article interesting. Also, thank you for your recommendation, I’ve never heard of Hank III, I’ll definitely check them out.

  10. how is this a list of greatest country songs ever and it doesn’t have He stopped loving her today. It is hands down the most iconic country song, and no list is complete without it. I’m also surprised Hank Williams sr. or jr didn’t make the list. I think trying to narrow down country music to five songs is almost impossible and two of them are john denver.

    1. Hi. Thanks for your comment.

After reading what you wrote, I checked all your recommendations. They are truly amazing.

I should have included them, but the thing is, I am new to country music and I hadn’t listened to these songs when I wrote it.

There’s an updated list with myTop Country Songs Of All Time coming soon, when I have more experience on this genre. Stay tuned!
